Interview with Mylk & Butter Co. Founder - Krishna Chan
|
Today, we’re sitting down with Krishna Chan, founder of Mylk & Butter Co. - a deeply intentional beauty brand inspired by ritual, balance, and the quiet art of self-care. Created from a desire to offer women a moment to reconnect with themselves, Mylk & Butter Co. goes beyond skincare. Guided by Ayurvedic philosophy and a profound appreciation for sensorial beauty, Krishna formulates products that nourish not only the skin, but also the emotional experience of daily ritual. |

From thoughtfully chosen botanical oils to the harmony of texture, aroma and performance, every formulation reflects Krishna’s belief that beauty should feel grounding, restorative and deeply supportive.
In this interview, we speak with Krishna about the inspiration behind the brand, the influence of Ayurveda, her approach to formulation, and why slowing down through ritual has become more important than ever.
What inspired you to create Mylk & Butter Co.?
Mylk & Butter.Co started back late 2021, inspired by my close friend and former co-founder, Emily Barden, a wonderful doula and mother of three.
It came from a deep awareness that so many mothers move through their days without the time or space to find something that truly nourishes them, something that supports not just their bodies but also their sense of self. We wanted to create a way to gently bring them back to themselves, to feel held, seen, and quietly reminded of their own worth and care.
At its heart, it is about honouring the divine feminine through something holistic, meaningful, and quietly transformative in daily ritual.

Are there any hero ingredients you always come back to?
In Ayurveda, there is an understanding that everything is interconnected, and I feel I translate that into our formulations through texture, aroma, and sensorial flow. My approach to formulation is compositional rather than purely cosmetic, guided by balance, pacing, contrast and harmony - not dissimilar to the way one might compose music, where each ingrdient is considered in relation rather than isolation - an ethos that extends through the textures of the products and their French-inspired naming, forming a language of skincare that feels intentional, sensorial and cohesive. Some oils bring softness and fluidity; others bring richness and depth or an almost invisible, veiled finish, but together they create a sense of quiet equilibrium across the skin.

For someone unfamiliar with Ayurveda, can you explain what it is and how it makes your brand stand out?”
Ayurveda is an ancient and holistic tradition from india that sees skin as part of a wider state of balance, supporting it through nourishmen rather than correction. It shapes how i work and choose my oils, the way they work in harmony with the skin and how they interact with one another. I love weaving both Ayurvedia and non-ayurvedic oils guiding each formulation through the lens of trishodic balance to create rituals that feel nuanced & deeply supportive of the skin.
What is unique is that we don’t simply just focus on what the product does or follow the newest trends and fast fixes, but rather we emphasise creating a slower, more intentional skincare experience-one that people can return to daily as a moment of care.
The ritual experience of our oils is designed to be slow, sensorial, and restorative, where skincare becomes a daily ritual of presence-an unspoken pause where botanical elements and sensory experience meet, inviting the skin to be cared for in a more considered and gentle way.
Are there any new rituals or product categories you’re excited to explore?
I’m very excited to share Auréa Sol, alongside our upcoming reparative night oil Lunaire, which will be released in the coming months. Together with Lumière, they complete a trilogy in our ritual skincare, Lumière brings out an inner glow, Lunaire restores it in quiet rhythm, and Auréa Sol nourishes the circle of life.
Rooted in Ayurvedic principles of balance, cyclical rhythm, and the harmony of doshas, each formulation is designed to honour the skin as a living ecosystem in constant dialogue with nature. As a formulator, I approach this collection as a complete botanical system for face, body and family ritual, guided by the rhythms of the sun, the moon, and the pranic flow, or universal energy.
What’s one product in your range you’re most proud of, and what makes it distinctly “you”?
Lumière is such a wonderful thirst-quenching oil for the skin. It absorbs effortlessly to rebalance, strengthen, and support the skin barrier.
I feel it embodies that Ayurvedic influence in a way that compliments the way we live today. In particular, through the guided tridoshic approach - supporting a wide range of skin states rather than targeting one concern in isolation.
As a multipurpose ritual, I love that it can be used as a primer or moisturiser or blended with SPF or foundation powder for a soft, luminous finish. Subtle but highly effective, it works in harmony with your skin to restore glow and resilience.
And on a more emotional level, it’s designed to feel like a grounding step in someone’s day-something simple, intimate, and steady that brings the skin back into balance without effort or overwhelm.
A big part of my work is also centred around care and connection especially for women and mothers and creating something that feels grounding and supportive in their own journey.
